Ugliness and Its Representation Forms in Huseyin Rahmi Gurpinar’s Novels

Perceptions and judgments relating to the body generally emerge in the context of aesthetic standards and acceptances of societies and take root over time. In fiction texts, aesthetic acceptances and judgments about society are implied by concentrating on the description of the bodily features of the characters who exist in flesh and blood and represent a life fiction. Therefore, when it is looked at the fictional texts, it is seen that especially the characters defined through ugliness or formlessness are exposed to a tragic effect or stigmatized as funny. Beauty and ugliness are included in the fiction in the context of social acceptances because body depictions have a large place in the novels of Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar, who adopts a realist approach. Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar describes the body characteristics of the characters and the distinctive aspects of these characteristics reflected in their behaviours, down to the last detail in his novels. In Gürpınar’s novels, aesthetic acceptances such as beauty and ugliness determined by society sometimes form the basis of fiction and sometimes take an important place as factors that affect the bond that the characters establish with social life. In this article, It is going to be discussed that the bond that the characters establish with life and the social world, who come to the forefront with their ugliness in Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar’s novels. In the article, It is going to be analyzed how ugliness is handled in the fictional world through a sociological approach.
